1. As mentioned in our last NAS NEWS, our Internet Security Scan (ISS) service (see https://www-s2.cso.uiuc.edu/iss/iss.cgi) has drawn attention to the need for us to review the authentication and authorization procedures for networks and network administrators.

The first survey in this process is now available at: https://www-s2.cso.uiuc.edu/nas/survey.cgi

Please update your information at your earliest convienience. This survey is very short and should only take a few seconds for each network you administer. Note the isdn nets are all administered by CCSO and will not show up on your list even if you are a contact for one.

I would like to clarify one point that was perhaps not clear enough in our previous notice. The one network administrator we are trying to identify is the one who will designate the netids and services of other administrators on the network. We are not limiting any of our support services to just one individual. Those not listed as primary still maintain their access to register hosts etc. Currently only the primary netadmin can run ISS, but that will change when we get to the second stage of our efforts.

For those administrators who do not yet have a network id to log into the survey page please follow this procedure for an Off-Campus Request for a Network ID. You will need this ID to use ISS, and for future DNS host registration requests, among other services.

Contact the Unit for whom you administer a network. Ask them to send a request on your behalf for a network ID via campus mail to:
  CCSO Account Services
  CCSO, 1420 DCL, Campus MC-256
or via email to: accting@uiuc.edu
with your Name, SSN, and a terminate date. These must be renewed once a year. The netid will be created within 3 working days of a correct request being received. The netids will be mailed back to the unit contact person. (Soon, we'll have a mechanism to send back encrypted passwords.) Allied staff will have to change their passwords by coming into CCSO Account Services or by faxing a Security Information form. These forms can be obtained by calling CCSO Account Services at 217/333-6760.

See also http://www.uiuc.edu/ccso/pubs/FAQs/ph/ph.html and http://www.uiuc.edu/ccso/pubs/all/200/ug200.html.

Note a network id may only be assigned to a single person and should never be shared with anyone else. Contractors providing administration services must register each person they wish to authorize to perform UIUC network administration functions.

2. We are pleased to announce that Scott Schingel has joined the NAS group of CCSO. Scott previously worked at the National Council of Teachers of English in Urbana as a Network Administrator. He is a Certified NetWare Engineer (CNE), and has been involved with networking for over 8 years.

His campus phone number is 5-NAS5 (265-6275) and a photo is available at: http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~schingel/scott.jpg

As always requests for assistance should be emailed to admin-help@uiuc.edu to allow for proper tracking.

Mark Monnin has recently joined the Operations Group to assist Dale Smoes as the Technology Manager of the Operations Center. Mark will be responsible for overseeing the coordination, development, evaluation, and deployment of technologies that will allow the Operations Staff to better monitor and manage the campus network and production computing systems. Mark will also be responsible for managing the NAS group in serving campus network administrators and closely integrating the group into various aspects of the Operations Center, Comm Eng. and other CCSO support groups.

3) Work continues to progress on upgrading the campus DNS service.

The old 128.174.36.254 (Cyclops) dns server address should now be replaced with 128.174.5.102 (Cyclops2). While the old cyclops address will continue to work for about a year, please start using the new address instead as soon as possible.

The current on-campus dns servers are now:
128.174.5.58 (argus)
128.174.5.102 (cyclops2)
129.79.1.1 (ns.indiana.edu)
In the near future the standard DNS servers Argus (128.174.5.58) and Cyclops2 (128.174.5.102) will only be accessible from On-Campus networks. On campus networks are one of our three address ranges 128.174.X.X, 130.126.X.X, or 192.17.X.X. The authoritative DNS servers for UIUC from off the campus network dns1.cso.uiuc.edu (128.174.5.103) and ns2.cso.uiuc.edu (128.174.5.104) will only provide information on the domains hosted at UIUC so should not be used in any client configurations. They provide secondary service to other dns servers, so off campus users should use the appropriate dns servers for their connection, not the campus dns servers. A diagram of this is at: http://cub.cso.uiuc.edu/nas/images/dns.gif

This will impact notebook users who may connect at other institutions and will now have to change DNS entries in addition to host and gateway information (unless set by DHCP). Windows users may find the shareware program NetSwitcher handy for this (http://www.netswitcher.com/). Dialup users who may switch between the UIUC terminal servers and local ISP's will also now need to pay closer attention to which dns servers are configured for which access provider. The campus dns servers will no longer work when dialing in via local ISP's.
